'Tis the season to adopt or foster a lonely pet for the Christmas holidays, said Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter officials. Lafourche has a variety of adoptable dogs, puppies, kittens and full-grown cats, shelter clerk Kelli Toups said. The parish agency is looking to have all its pets in a home by Dec. 20.

Now, instead of driving to the Lafourche Animal Shelter, you can call the shelter and staff will put the information up on the new lost-and-found Web page. "It'll help to get the public to find their pets easier and faster," shelter clerk Kelli Toups said. The Web site, which is updated several times a day, is www.lafourchegov.org/LPAS-Found_dt.aspx . Parish spokesman Brennan Matherne said pet owners in the community were looking for an easier way to find lost pets or to make neighbors aware of a foun

One idea under discussion, employees said, is a telemarketing effort to directly solicit money from residents of Lafourche. "We all agreed, the money would go straight to spay and neuter," shelter clerk Kelli Toups said. "It's important."

In August 2008, there were 98 cats and 37 dogs turned over to the shelter — a total of 135. That number this year was down to 63, less than half. Adoptive pet owners will now be required to pay for medical services for spaying and neutering their animals. However, the shelter will offer vouchers worth $50 to help subsidize the cost as long as owners use a Lafourche veterinarian. Cost to spay and neuter pets depends on an animal's type and size, but it can exceed $100.

But we have to start doing something.   -Kelli Toups

The dogs, formerly owned by Anthony and Sari Lee Watson, will be moved to three separate animal rescue sites in Georgia sometime next week, said Kelly Toups, the Lafourche Animal Shelter's clerk. "It will be less dogs to care for and they're going to be going to a rescue rather than us having to euthanize them," Toups said. The Watsons were charged with 22 counts of simple cruelty to animals for allegedly abandoning their dogs and three rabbits.
